Less Heat Drop the flat iron, curling iron/wand, even the hair dryer! If it produces heat don't use it. If you use to much heat, you may get heat damage, and I can assure that-that is probably one of the worst things that can happen to you hair. Once your hair is heat damaged you can't reverse it, you'll have to cut it off. And if you're like me that's certainly not what you want to do, so now you have to deal with that awkward look of a looser curl pattern, or a completely straight one like I did. This will affect how you do your hair, I had to do twist outs and braid out all of the time to get the two textures to blend, which becomes really annoying when you want to wear your natural curl pattern. I only use heat about every 6 months. But if I'm looking for growth I'll go a whole year without it and I do believe it helps a lot.
Protect Your Hair at Night You should defiantly wear a satin bonnet/scarf or sleep on a satin pillow case. Cotton will absorb a lot of moisture in your hair. So if you're sleeping on a cotton pillow case without covering your hair, that's about 8 hours wear hair loosing moisture because it's all being absorbed by your pillow case. Satin will not absorb the moisture from your hair, thus allowing you to retain it.
Protective Styles A protective style is done to minimize the amount of split ends you get. When your hair is down and rubbing against you clothes it's causing friction which will cause split ends. A protective style is as easy as wearing a bun or any other style wear the ends of hair are not rubbing against your clothes or is tucked. Now that you're doing more to prevent split ends, you will not have to cut as much off during a trim.
Keep Your Hair Moisturized Moisturized hair is a must if you want prevent breakage. Without hydration your hair will get dry and brittle, which will cause breakage, and then you'll have more split ends Water is defiantly the most important, and is the only thing that actually hydrate your hair and body. So conditioners, and water based products, along with water it self will be the best way to go when it come to moisture. You can also use an oil to seal in the moisture.
Detangle Hair While Wet You should detangle your when it's wet because if you detangle while it's dry it will cause breakage, which will obviously cause split ends. I usually detangle my hair while in the shower because it speeds up the process and I don't have to worry about using my spray bottle all of the time.
